LOTS of LEARNING with LEGO LAB

It's hard to believe that November is already here, and our school year is going In our first Lego lab this year, students enjoyed experimenting with a variety of Lego blocks for a hands-on opportunity to learn some basics of structural engineering.  Design teams worked together, using problem-solving and questioning skills to create their engineering projects.  Experts in this field often examine similar challenges while crafting buildings, bridges, cars, dams, stadiums and other large structures.

Our Bible infusion this week comes from scripture the details God's specific plan for the ark, and Noah's express obedience in following God's plan.

Genesis 6:14 - 15 -- "Make yourself an ark of gopher wood.  Make rooms in the ark, and cover it inside and out with pitch.  This is how you are to make it:  the length of the ark 300 cubits, its breadth 50 cubits, and its height 30 cubits."

Students calculated that Noah's ark was approximately 450 feet long; 75 feet wide; and 45 feet high.  Many elements that God commanded Noah regarding the ark are based on structural engineering concepts.  We discussed in detail the following concepts:
1.  Building to scale
2.  Loading constraints
3.  How to brace
4.  Designing around nature
5.  Tension and compression

Design teams worked to create a variety of objects including bridges, dinosaurs, boats, snakes and ocean animals.  All the students enjoyed "free building" at the end of class.

A scarecrow welcomes STEM students to the lab!
These first graders, outfitted for Thanksgiving, enjoyed digging for blocks!
Sadie, Ella and Maddie are proud of their Lego dinosaur!
These third graders are working on a design plan.
Grant worked hard to create his boat!
Maddie was very proud of her boat!
Teamwork was super!
Fourth graders use problem-solving skills to create!
Their plan is coming together!
Great job!
Love it when a plan comes together!
Pretty cool design!
This is harder than it looks!
Another great dinosaur!
Great small bridge!
Creative octopus!
Neat dinosaur, guys!
Peyton created a cool stingray!
The dinosaurs were VERY popular!

Sixth grade girls very intense as they build the perfect design!
Looking for the right pieces!
Good job!
Great suspension style bridge!
This group did a created a great design!

Emily's ocean creature!
Abby's working on a starfish!

Completed with some help from Easton!

Shelby and Carissa think it might fly!
Ta-da!
