The Incredible, EDIBLE Cell!

In this week's STEM Lab, students were introduced to cell biology and living things.  They learned basic information about cells and the functions of various organelles.  We discussed the differences between animal cells and plants cells, and we understood the importance of cells in every living thing.

Bible Infusion -- Genesis 2:7 -- Then the Lord God formed man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.

Students really enjoyed our "Incredible, Edible Cell" activity.  Each student created an edible cell model using a sugar cookie (cell); frosting (cytoplasm); life savers (nucleus); licorice (endoplasmic reticulum); mini-M&Ms (lysosomes); jelly beans (vacuoles); Mike & Ike candies (ribosomes and mitochondria).  As we built the models, we discussed the function of each organelle.

Of course, the fun part was eating the cell!
